Месса начинается с литургии слова - духовной подготовки к таинству евхаристии. Прихожане раскаиваются в грехах, слушают чтение отрывков из Библии и поют псалмы. Цикл обязательных песнопений открывает молитва "Господи, помилуй!" (Kyrie eleison!). Достаточно древняя по происхождению, она поётся не на латинском, а на греческом языке. "Господи, помилуй!" завершает покаяние.
